Philodendron scandens is known as the Sweetheart Plant, or Heart-Leaf, due to the beautiful leaf shape. It’s obvious association with love makes it a thoughtful gift for weddings, anniversaries or just because.
The sweetheart Plant is a vining Philodendron and can grow to astonishing lengths, either supported as a climber or left trailing from a hanging basket or shelf. A row of trailing Philodendron scandens makes a fantastic living, green curtain. Mature plants may produce spathes of green-white flowers. This option is trained to grow on a moss pole.

Horty Hints
Leaning tower of leaves! As the plant grows it may become top heavy and the moss pole can start to lean. Straighten the moss pole up and pack compost in tight around it using your fingertips, being mindful not to damage any roots.
You grow, girl! Increase the bushiness of this plant by pinching out after a leaf node on single stems. This will promote off shoots and more branches, meaning more leaves.
Location, Location, Location! These plants will thrive in almost all levels of humidity, however placing them in high humidity environments will encourage larger leaves.
Light
The Sweetheart Plant is versatile. Best in medium light but can tolerate bright light and some degree of shade. Avoid direct sunlight however, as this may scorch the plant.
Watering
Keep the soil moist at all times. Allow the top of the soil to dry-out slightly before re-watering. Will tolerate some degree of drought better than having its roots too wet.
Temperature
Prefers average household temperatures, between 16°C and 24°C is ideal with a minimum of 13°C. Can tolerate a draught but it is not recommended for best results.
Humidity
The Sweetheart Plant will do fine in normal home humidity, but thrives in more humid environments. Consider misting occasionally for best results.
Feed
Apply a weak solution of liquid fertiliser two or three times during the growing season.
Height & Growth Rate
The scandens is a fast-growing, vigorous climber which typically reaches an ultimate height of anything up to 4 metres. Trim as required.
Toxicity
Philodendron are poisonous to humans and animals. Keep away from children and pets and take care when handling.
